Several years ago, PBS came out with a very cute video.
(Here is the link to the you tube video.) It gave us the idea of, instead of having a super bowl party, to have a superb owl party. We have done this off and on since. Here are some ideas if you want to try it.
Other videos we watch:
Jeopardy Category
BBC Owl Flight
PBS has a Nature documentary all about owls, which is really good. Unfortunately it isn't on Passport for streaming now, so we got it from the library.
Of course there are also countless cute owl videos. This is probably our favorite. (It does have the letters WTF written on the screen, so fair warning. In our minds we say what the flerkin...)
Decorations/Books:
For decorations we brought up a few stuffed animal owls we had on hand, and then set out lots of library books about owls. Here are a few to look for at your library:
This book is a very good companion to dissecting owl pellets.
This book gives very good descriptions of owl species, and has beautiful detailed drawings.
This book has good information, and again, gorgeous illustrations. Here are my favorites:
I loved the style of this picture book. All the animals noises would be fun to read aloud to little kids.
This picture book is so cute! Lots of very adorable animals.
This is by far one of our favorite picture books. Even though my girls are big we still enjoy reading it.
Look at him roasting marshmallows on his spear! He's so cute.
Food:
Miss A made trays in the shape of owls.
We meant to do similar cracker and veggie trays, but we ran out of ganas, and just put those on the table.
Here is one of our pinterest inspirations.
Here is another.
I also made an old family recipe for no bake cookies. I added some fiber one cereal that looks like sticks or mouse bones, and called them owl pellets.
The big hit of the food was making owl cookies. We had planned on putting little owl cookies along the top of a bundt cake. But the bundt cake, as pretty much every time I try making a bundt cake, didn't bake evenly. Crispy outside and runny inside... It still tasted fantastic of course, but we ended up just having a sort of owl bar with all kinds of cookies.
Here is our inspiration pin.
It was very fun, and next year we'll skip the cake and just do this. We had a bit of leftover birthday frosting to glue the cookies together.
Here is my owl.
Here is Miss R's owl. She did hers on her cake lump.
Here is Miss A's, also on cake.
Here is Miss M's.
We did eat actual healthy (ish) food. We had chicken cordon bleu (hamsters), and salad.
Here is a pdf with food names to put on cards.
Here is a little Superb Owl Party sign.
